This week is Fire Prevention Week.  It is important that your home has a fire escape plan in case a fire occurs at your home.  It is also important that you have working smoke detectors in your home.  Here are a few questions that we have been asked regarding smoke detectors:

Q: How often should a smoke detector be replaced?

A: Smoke detectors should be replaced within 10 years of the MANUFACTURE date.

Q: How can I find the manufacture date on my smoke alarm?

A: To find when your smoke detectors were manufactures, remove the alarm and check the back of the detector and it is printed there.

Q: Are hardwired or battery operated smoke alarms better?

A: The National Fire Protection Association stated that hardwired alarms operated 94% of the time while battery powered ones only operated 80% of the time.  Hardwired are also better because if one smoke alarm sounds, they all do.

Q: Where should smoke alarms be installed?

A: In every room, especially sleeping rooms.

Q: How often should smoke alarms be tested?

A: The National Fire Protection Association suggests testing your smoke alarms at least once a month.

Q: How do I test my smoke alarm?

A: There is a test button on the outside of your smoke alarm, if you push it and here a beep, it’s working.

Q: What do I do if my smoke alarm goes off?

A: This may seem like a silly question but a lot of people go to shut off their smoke alarm or check their home for a fire.  If your smoke alarm goes off, exit your home and stay outside.  It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Q: What is the main reason that my fire alarm isn’t working?

A: The most common reason is either missing or dead batteries.

Q: What does it mean when my smoke alarm makes a chirping sound?

A: Usually this mean the batteries need to be replaced.  If you hear this, try replacing the batteries then test the alarm.

It is really important that we all have working smoke detectors in our homes.  If you need help with ensuring yours are working properly or if you would like some installed, please give us a call at 801-355-4433.
