The warmest periods of the year are fast approaching, and while summer plumbing may not be the first thing you think of here, there are a few concerns you may want to pay a little extra attention to this time of year. At Whipple Service Champions, our experts are here to help you stay on top of all the little details.

What are some of the areas you need to emphasize during the summer months? Let’s look at a few of the most frequent.

Clogged Disposal

Summer means more cookouts and barbeques, and for folks who are taking part, the garbage disposal needs a careful eye. Things like watermelon, corn, and various meat leftovers aren’t great for the disposal, and if possible, try to limit what goes down there. Cooking oils can also damage disposal systems over time – avoid dumping these down, and run cold water through the disposal for a few seconds before and after use just to clear any remaining food particles inside it.

Sewer Line Backups

These times are mostly past this year, but heavy rain can get into sewer pipes and cause significant backups. In addition, tree roots are more likely to spread out and reach toward your main sewer line during summer, when they’ll be receiving ample sunlight and water.

Clogged Toilets

Household toilets become more regularly used during the summer, especially for anyone with children who are at home during the day instead of at school. Teach kids to only use moderate amounts of toilet paper, and to never flush anything but approved paper down the drain so as not to result in a clogged toilet.

Sprinkler Problems

Be sure to inspect and clean sprinkler heads before the season begins, and then once every month or so during it. Be sure to only mow the lawn while the heads are lowered, so you don’t risk damaging them.

Washing Machines

Your washing machine will also likely get more use over the summer, which can put more strain on it. Try to stay home when the machine is running in case any issues pop up, and also consider moving the machine away from the wall a little – this will prevent the hose from kinking.
