Here are some tips on why cleaning the toilet tank is important, plus how you can do so easily and without interrupting any component’s use.

- Mold: Mold is one of the most common bathroom plumbing concerns, and it’s known to show up when there’s lots of standing water present – exactly the case most of the time inside the toilet tank. Particularly for toilets that are only sparsely used, the potential for mold buildup in this tank gets higher. Mold will not only make the bathroom smell bad and be hard to get rid of, but it can spread to other areas of the bathroom or home and may even cause or exacerbate health issues like asthma or allergies.
- Contamination particles: Over time, if you don’t clean the toilet tank, dust and other debris can make its way inside. As these build up over time, the insides of the tank and various fixtures may begin to wear down or erode.
Tank Cleaning Steps
Here are some basic steps to cleaning a toilet tank:
- Turn off the water supply to your toilet – most shutoff valves are located directly behind the toilet itself.
- Mix a quarter-cup of white vinegar with a full cup of clean water to use as a cleaner.
- If you choose to use pre-made toilet tank tablets instead, be careful – if they have too much bleach and are placed too close to rubber fixtures, they can begin to erode these fixtures.
- Clean the toilet tank regularly – at least twice a year, and more often if possible.
- Always wear gloves with any cleaning chemicals, particularly if you come into contact with the toilet.
