Differences Between Central Air Conditioning and Window Units

Both central air conditioning (AC) and window units will keep you cool, but which type you choose depends on many factors. If you’re renting a small apartment, you probably don’t have the option of central AC. Even if you own a house, central AC might be way beyond your budget. There’s a reason why central AC costs so much more to install than a window unit. Here are the differences between them.

How Air Conditioning Works Overall

Window units and central AC work along the same principles. Refrigerant starts as a hot gas that releases its heat until it condenses into a liquid. The liquid flows through an expansion valve until it turns into a low-pressure, cool gas, which in turn flows through a heat exchanger. This gas cools down warm air pulled into the air conditioner, which is then blown into the house.

About the Window Unit

The window unit, as its name says, fits in a window. It is easy to install, and a layperson with moderate skills can probably install one. It can also be inexpensive. As for a power source, it can just be plugged into the nearest outlet. it doesn’t need much maintenance, which can’t be said of a central AC system. It can also be taken out of the window during the winter and stored in a closet.

One drawback of a window unit is that it only cools down one room. This may be all that you need if you have a tiny apartment or a tiny house. If you have a moderately sized house and put a window unit in each room, it’s going to cost you more to run than even a central air conditioner. Also, though technology has made window units quieter, the compressor is far enough inside the house for you to notice it when it’s working.

About Central AC

Central AC is meant to cool down your entire house, and new technology has allowed the system to be zoned and operated remotely over your smartphone. However, installing a central AC system in your home when you didn’t have one before is a huge undertaking that could be disruptive to your life and expensive. You may also have to call in an electrician as well as your local gas company or utility. Unlike a window unit, you’ll need to have a professional check your central AC system at least once a year.

Both a window unit and a central AC system have their place. Consult with your HVAC tech to see which one is best for you. If you live in Salt Lake City, UT or a surrounding area and need AC installation services, make your first call to Whipple Service Champions.
