When the first cold front of the season makes its way in, is your furnace ready to handle it? And when was the last time an inspection was done? One does not want to be the one to find out it has failed on the year’s coldest night.
If you live in Utah you know the weather can turn on a dime; what is a warm afternoon one week will have you at the windshield with a scraper the next. Make fall your opportunity to see that your furnace is in proper order for whatever winter has in store.
We at Whipple Cooling, Heating, Plumbing & Electrical have been in the business of making Utah families comfortable since 1947. The Whipple Service Champions are at (801) 515-2213 if you would rather have a pro make the adjustments. For the do-it-yourselfer we have some advice further down.
Why put in the work in the fall?
Winter puts a strain on any home heating system in this state. Over the summer months a furnace is apt to wear and collect dust without you being any the wiser. Then you are left with an inefficient unit that is expensive to run and likely to let you down when you least expect it.
Some fall preparation goes a long way. You will have a furnace that is more efficient and less of a chance of being left in the cold.
A few simple measures
To give the season a good start there are things you can do:
- A clogged air filter is hard on a furnace, so change it for a new or clean one
- Clear the area around the furnace of boxes and the like to allow for airflow
- Check all the return and supply vents in the house are open
- Fire up the heat and confirm the thermostat is working as it ought to
- With the system running, listen for a rattle or squeal of any kind
- Have a look at the unit for soot, debris or other trouble
- See to it the carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries and are in order
It is a means of having a cleaner, safer operation when the deep cold arrives and of dealing with minor issues before they become something else.
What to be on the alert for
There are telltale signs the furnace wants a professional to have a look. Watch for:
- Some rooms warm and others not
- Excessive cycling of the unit
- An energy bill out of line with your normal usage
- Vents with little in the way of airflow
- A yellow or unsteady burner flame as opposed to a steady blue
- An odd smell once the heat is on
These are the sort of things that get worse with time. It is wise to have a technician out to them before the onset of winter.
Let us handle it
You could try to test the safety controls or the heat exchanger, or to clean the burners, but it is risky and may end up causing damage. Better to leave such matters to a trained hand.
