Basics and Signs of Worn Out Pipes

When you consider all the elements involved in your plumbing system – faucets, showers, toilets, worn out pipes, drains and several others – it’s no surprise that the overall system undergoes quite a bit of wear and tear. Over time, corrosion and little leaks may form, which will cost you money in the short term and potentially lead to expensive future repairs.

At Whipple Service Champions, our plumbers know how to identify and repair these issues – but shouldn’t you have at least a working knowledge as well? Here are a few basic disclaimers on your pipe system in general, plus how to keep an eye out for worn out pipes.

Basic Pipe Disclaimers

A few basic things to know about your pipe system in general:

  • Plumbing naturally wears down over the years due to wear and tear. This can cause leaks or bursts.
  • Eroded plumbing and leaks can exist in the home without being noticed, often for long periods of time. These will continuously cost you more and more money.
  • Annual inspection of all plumbing features is recommended, particularly for homes over 50 years old.
  • Annual inspections can prevent emergency replacements, which can in turn save you thousands on top of the savings you’ll see on your utility bill.

A Careful Eye

Always keep an eye out for anything in your plumbing system that seems suspicious. This includes brown stains on the walls, ceilings or any surfaces located below plumbing fixtures – these stains might reveal hidden leaks or areas of moisture.

In addition, keep an eye out for the color of your water. Noticing colored tint after turning it on for the first time recently could be a sign of rust or worn out pipes. Discolored water is a sure sign that you should have your pipes inspected by one of our plumbers.

Dripping

It’s common to notice drips in the faucet immediately after use. This is normal in most cases, but if the drip continues, this could be a problem. Low drip faucets should be fixed before they worsen, costing you later in repairs or energy bills.
